The power distribution industry is constantly evolving and the smart grid concept is central to the changes taking place right now. Taking into account its particular situation and the challenges ahead, Hydro-Québec intends to take advantage of new smart technologies to continue to improve its grid and surpass current performance levels. Many projects are already under way and the company is reviewing the various possible applications and technologies to make its distribution system smarter. In its constant desire to provide top-quality service to its customers, Hydro-Québec is closely following the evolution of the smart grid around the world and is adapting its grid development to its own specific context.

Daniel Richard, Vice President – Distribution System

Daniel Richard was appointed Vice President – Distribution System at Hydro-Québec Distribution in May 2011. In this capacity, he manages the operation, control and development of the distribution grid as well as all initiatives aimed at ensuring its long-term operability. He is also responsible for metering activities, including a major remote-reading project that involves the rollout of an advanced metering infrastructure and the replacement of 3.8 million meters throughout Québec by 2017.

From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Richard served as Vice President – Customers at Hydro-Québec Distribution. In addition to call centre operations, he oversaw energy efficiency programs, billing, collection and customer credit risk management as well as the development of related business processes. He also ensured the electricity supply of the Québec market.

Daniel Richard began his career at Hydro-Québec in the 1980s as a water systems engineer at Hydro-Québec Production. Subsequently, he held positions related to electricity supply and demand management in various business units responsible for strategic planning, finance and international activities.

Mr. Richard obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Applied Science from the école Polytechnique de Montréal. He has been a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec since 1979 and sits on the board of the Canadian Club of Montreal.
